The Significance of Dresses Over the Years

Historically, the dress as a garment has gone through many different phases and it has had many expressions and meanings over time. The dress has always been associated with the female gender and is still seen today, for example, as the symbol of 'ladies' toilet,' where the pictogram shows a person wearing a dress. It wasn't until the late 60s/early 70s that it was no longer remarkable for women to wear anything other than dresses, such as pants. The feminist movement then made it possible for women to wear pants and for a long time, this was also the primary garment that women wore (the dress was therefore somewhat relegated to the background). Today, however, things are not so sharply divided, and the dress is worn on an equal footing with pants.

The dress has therefore gone through three phases before it has gained the significance it has today: first, it had the significance as the only garment women were allowed to wear. However, the dress still had high value, as it was the only garment on the market for women and ladies. With women's liberation, the dress became less significant in terms of newer alternatives coming onto the market (pants), so the dress was no longer considered particularly valuable. Today, pants and dresses are considered equal garments, both are considered fashionable, and they both have great value for the modern woman.
